Living in Galax, Virginia

A small city on the Virginia line, home of the Old Fiddler's Convention and the southern end of the New River Trail.

Living in Galax

Galax real estate covers a little of everything: older homes on in-town streets, brick ranches on quiet side roads, and building lots and small acreage on the edges of the city. Galax is an independent city, which means it isn't part of a county, and it sits right where Carroll and Grayson counties meet. Plenty of people with a Galax mailing address actually live right across the line in one of those counties, which matters for taxes and schools.

Galax is best known for music. The Old Fiddler's Convention has been held here every August since 1935, and 2026 was its 90th year. It's also the southern end of the New River Trail State Park, so you can walk, bike or ride a horse out of town along the river.

For everyday life, Galax has its own school division, Galax City Public Schools, and its own hospital, Twin County Regional Healthcare.

How Avante Realty Group serves Galax

Our office is in Woodlawn, a few minutes east of Galax on US 58, so Galax is home ground for me. I've listed and sold here, including a brick ranch on Caldwell Street and a building lot in West Galax.

When I sell a home in Galax, it gets its own marketing plan: a price we can defend, professional photos and drone, and targeted ads aimed at buyers in places like Winston-Salem, Greensboro and Charlotte, who can drive up for a weekend. When I help someone buy here, I make sure they know which side of the city line a home is on, and what that means for them.

Galax neighborhoods and nearby areas

Inside the city, you'll find older homes close to Main Street and the shops and restaurants downtown, and established neighborhoods like West Galax, where building lots still come up from time to time. Right outside the city limits, the homes spread out, with more land, more privacy and longer drives.

Many buyers who start in Galax end up looking in the towns around it too. Woodlawn is a few minutes east, Hillsville is a bit farther toward I-77, and Fancy Gap sits up on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Galax homes and land

The housing in and around Galax ranges from in-town homes on small lots to homes with acreage right outside the city, plus building lots and raw land. Prices change a lot from one street to the next, and a computer estimate can't see the difference between a city lot and a few acres across the line. Getting around

US 58 and US 221 run through Galax. To get to I-77, most people head east through Hillsville to Exit 14. From there it's an easy drive south into North Carolina or north toward Wytheville and I-81.
