Is a Woodlawn Mountain Home a Good Weekend Getaway If You Live in North Carolina?

Title card for the article: Is a Woodlawn Mountain Home a Good Weekend Getaway If You Live in North Carolina?

The Short Answer

For a lot of North Carolina buyers, yes. Woodlawn sits in Carroll County, Virginia, a short drive north of the state line, so a house here can put you in the Blue Ridge every Friday night. Whether it works for you depends less on the town and more on how a particular house handles sitting empty five days a week.

I'm Linda with Avante Realty Group. Before weekend buyers fall for a view, I walk them through the questions below.

How Far Is Woodlawn From North Carolina?

Woodlawn is closer than many people expect. Wikipedia's entry on Interstate 77 in Virginia says the highway crosses into the state near Mount Airy, North Carolina. AARoads says I-77 runs 111 miles from the stretch near Fancy Gap down to Charlotte.

Look closely at the drive itself. The Virginia Department of Transportation's I-77 Corridor Improvement Plan says Fancy Gap Mountain has had unusual fog and wind shear events because of its terrain. If you'll usually arrive after dark, drive the route at night at least once before you buy.

The last few miles to the house count as much as the interstate does. A steep gravel driveway that seems charming in June can keep you out in January, so ask who clears the road and how it holds up in bad weather.

What Makes a Mountain House Work as a Getaway?

A weekend house has a different job than a full-time home. It has to sit on its own all week and still be in good shape when you get back.

  • Heat and plumbing: Ask how the house is heated and whether it can stay above freezing while it's empty. If it can't, find out how it gets winterized.
  • Signal and internet: If you want a smart thermostat or cameras, test the service at the house itself. Coverage can change from one hollow to the next.
  • Upkeep: Grass, gutters and leaves won't wait for your weekend, so decide who will handle them.
  • Someone local: It's worth a lot to have a neighbor or caretaker who can check the place after a storm.

When buyers tell me "Everything needs work," I remind them that a weekend house should give you time off, not a project list. A plain house in sound shape often beats a fixer-upper with a better view.

Plan for the yearly costs, too. The Carroll County Commissioner of the Revenue lists the county's real estate tax rate at $0.49 per $100 of assessed value.

What Will You Do Up Here on a Weekend?

You'll find plenty to fill a Saturday. Visit Southwest Virginia says Carroll County has 30 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway, between Mileposts 182 and 212, with easy access at Fancy Gap.

Virginia Tourism describes the New River Trail as a 57-mile linear park that follows an old railroad bed. Virginia State Parks lists a trail access point at Cliffview, near Galax. Sections of the Parkway can close in winter weather, so learn the back roads before you need them.
